The beautiful beside the raw
The human figure is central to the work. Faces and bodies are built up with powerful strokes, dark surfaces and clear traces of the process. Proportions are displaced, features are amplified, and the beautiful is allowed to exist side by side with the raw and the restless.
ROCHAN works with identity, vulnerability, strength and change — without giving the works one fixed explanation. Some pieces are deliberately more enigmatic, like fragments of a story we are only shown parts of. Symbols, shapes and colours may hint at something without revealing everything.
The unfinished, the uneven and the spontaneous are allowed to remain part of the expression. The traces of the hand and of the process matter as much as the motif itself.

Origins
The mask and the spirit
The symbols, masks and rituals of the first peoples run underneath this work — the belief that a carved face could hold a spirit, and that the spirit was owed something in return.
Those cultures lived as part of nature rather than above it. They took what they needed and gave thanks for it. To return to their forms now is not nostalgia; it is a refusal — of the smooth, the fast, the endlessly replaceable.
The gaze is the decisive element. The figures can appear searching, confronting, vulnerable or absent. They are human, but not portraits of particular people. They move between portrait, mask and abstraction — and they rarely let you look without looking back.

Where the hand leaves its trace
Nothing here is planned to the end. A face is found rather than designed — layer over layer, until something looks back. What stays on the surface is the record of that search: the correction, the hesitation, the stroke that was never smoothed away.
